Ulnar Nerve Fasciculations

New postby surgerystudies on Fri Aug 27, 2010 8:54 am

Hi, am looking for some help with a family member's problem.

He is a previously healthy male in his mid-30s w/recent onset of fasciculations isolated to his right forearm. Muscles affected appear to be flexor carpi ulnaris and the medial aspect of flexor digitalis profundus. Fasciculations started ~2wks ago, are recurrent & episodic in character, and occur at irregular intervals. He denies recent fevers, myalgias, rashes, general malaise, or loss of grip strength or abnormal sensation. No recent history of trauma, no significant PMH, no significant family PMH. He did recently start a surgical fellowship requiring a more finely detailed surgical technique, and he is right-handed. He had basic chemistries & CBC done in July for a pre-employment screen: only abnormality noted was a platelet count of 126K.

Any thoughts & suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Do they bother him in any way?
Any cramping or muscle weakness?

To date, the fasciculations have not compromised his operating abilities but because they are unpredictable, it's just worrisome. They occur in all settings: operating, working at the computer, at rest, etc....

No cramping, no detectable weakness, no muscle atrophy. Fasciculations do not occur in other locations.

If they do not affect his function in any way and his examination is normal then I would normally do no further investigations unless the situation changed.
You may want to look at a page dealing with this issue of BFS.
Hope that helps
