Weird symptoms such as disorientation, tingling, surges of heat that my doctors do not seem to understand

Child reporting strange sensations in head

New postby sbro123 on Sat Jan 10, 2009 1:23 am

Wondering if it's a serious cause for concern. MD says probably related to molars coming in. Dentsist said wtf?

7 yo otherwise very healthy child has reported 4 or 5 times a sensation like a water balloon popping in his head and having the feel of water drip for several seconds up to a minute afterward. The event has usually occurred while engaged in rough-housing or sports related activity. No other signs of distress are present (impaired mobility, vision etc.). Seems to frighten him more than anything. He says it feels like its happening at the rear of his head (centrally located) about an inch in. I've experienced water in the ears draining and sinuses draining but nothing like he describes. Thoughts?

Hi,
I think I know what he's talking about. That happens to me sometimes when I turn my head suddenly. It feels as though it may be caused by straining a tendon in the back of my neck, or maybe pinching a nerve... but I have no idea what actually causes it.

I have had neck injuries in the past (compression fracture and sprain), and weak neck muscles....

Other than reassuring you that he doesn't really have a balloon in his head, I doubt this helps much--but I thought you'd like to know that he's not the only one! He describes the sensation very well! I would add that the "water" feels very hot.

It is kind of a scary sensation, and it's aggravated by tensing up the muscles. I would have him take a deep breath, relax his body and hold still when it happens--it seems to go away quickly that way.

Does it happen when he moves in a certain way for instance when he opens his jaw?
