URGENT HELP Please ..... Post operative Meningitis

New postby antogeorge on Thu Apr 07, 2011 4:56 am

Hi ,

My wife was dianosed to have Foramen Magnum Meningioma with Cervicomedullary Compression. The surgery was conducted with a 85% resection. The biopsy showed that it was Meningiothelial Meningioma.

She started to develop fever after the surgery which was conducted 2 months ago and the doctor insisted that it was to do with a Urinary Infection she had. It took 45 days for the UTI to be completely cured. However, the fever still persisted. After various tests of Typhoid, TB, Jondis etc. he performed a Spinal tap and had the following results:

Appearance- Colourless (Clear)
XANTHOCHROMIA – NIL
CELLS – 132
RBCS – NIL
Protein – 388
Glucose – 57
Differential –
Neutrophils – 24%
Lymphocytes : 76%
Blood Sugar – 108
Quantity – 3 Ml
Z.N.Stain – Negative (No AFB)

He immediately started the following medication:

Inj- Dexona – 2 Vial
Inj Vancotec CP 500mg – every 6 hours
IVF NS 100ml – 5
Inj Meromer (meropenem) 1Gm – every 8 hours
Inj Hizole R 20mg - 2

On a second spinal tap after 7 days, we found the cell count reduced to 32 and Lymphocytes and neutrophils at 96% and 4% respectively. However, we were unable to test the protein count due to the shortage of fluid. We continued the medication with the following changes.

Inj Vancotec CP 500mg – every 6 hours
Inj Meromer (meropenem) 1Gm – every 8 hours

We had a 3rd spinal tap today after 14 days of the medication and the result showed Lymphocytes at 100% with no Neutrophils. However, the Cell Count has increased to 100 and Protein at 270.

The doctor is still continuing with the same medication with a lower doze. Can someone advise on the reason of the elevation of Protein and Cell count on the 3rd tap??

I am available on +91-9945441111 or antogeorge@hotmail.com .

Looking forward to hear from you all ASAP.

Thanks and Regards
Anto
