I have developed what I believe to be neurological pruritus (itching) after taking samples of an SSRI lexapro from my doctor. The itching is quite severe, to the point that I am unable to sleep and scratch until raw. I've drawn blood on 2 occasions from the scratching. I take no illegal drugs or prescriptions that could cause this. I've taken other antidepressants in the past with no side effects (sertraline and buoroprion). I'm unsure if I had hives due to the redness from intense scratching. I may have been allergic.
Topical treatments of hydrocortisone, menthol, and Benzocaine provided little or only very short periods of relief. Diphenhydramine caused drowsiness (as it should) and only Provided 2-3 hours of relief at a time. Hydroxyzine effectively eliminates the itch but I must take it once every 48-72 hours or symptoms return.
I thought this reaction to Lexapro would go away after a couple weeks or months, however, I've had this pervasive itch for over 2 years now. I believe the lexapro may have permanently altered the seratonin levels or receptors in my skin. I do not wish to rely on hydroxyzine for the rest of my life but both my dermatologist and general practitioner can only treat my symptoms. I would like to see a neurologist, but cannot currently afford to do so. I would like to know if there is any treatment available that may cure this neurological itch once and for all? If such a cure exists I could justify the expense of an office visit with a specialist, however I'm not willing to spend that kind if money just to be told to keep taking hydroxyzine. P
erhaps there's some test for seratonin levels in skin or a drug that can reset my serotonin receptors (maybe a serotonin inhibitor?). I may be way off about the serotonin hypothesis. I've scoured the web and have only been able to find others suffering like me. I've read accounts of others with long term reactions to Lexapro but I've found no solutions or treatments other than antihistamine treatments such as I am currently taking.
Any suggestions or insights would be greatly appreciated!
