Neurochemical imbalance & psychedelics

New postby Flickering on Wed Aug 17, 2011 2:47 am

Hi,

I suspect I have a neurochemical imbalance, and I would like to get it checked out with a neurologist, possibly with an MRI or EEG. The problem is that even the initial consultation costs a great deal of money, and I'm only willing to spend it if I can be sure it's worthwhile. Here's my problem.

I have recently used some hallucinogenic drugs (dextromethorphan, psilocybin and cannabis) and each one resulted in a very atypical experience better described as an acute psychotic episode than a mere 'bad trip'. It seems something in my brain doesn't cope with hallucinations or altered states of consciousness in general. This is a problem, because I was planning to seek ibogaine treatment for depression, overseas where it's legal (if experimental), and if I can't even handle low doses of marijuana, this isn't likely to be an option.

I want to know, would it be worth getting an MRI scan or something similar, to see if there's any unusual activity in my brain that might explain why I don't process hallucinogenic drugs properly? Or does it not work that way?

Also, does anyone know of a phenomenon like the one I'm describing? So far, I have encountered one other person online with very similar symptoms, but he doesn't know any more about it than I do.

One final detail is that I once suffered from Alice in Wonderland Syndrome or micropsia when I was a child, and that I may presently also have some form of depersonalisation disorder.

Any and all answers appreciated - thank you.
