Nervous system "unwired" - HELP!!!

New postby verysore777 on Sat Aug 13, 2011 1:44 am

I have fallen onto my coccyx on a gutter 11 months ago and have had severe debilitating pain the whole way up my spine, into the base of my skull across my shoulders and the whole way down my leg to my left foot (perhaps the sciatic nerve - it hurts a lot in the middle of my left buttock as well and across my lower back) since, though nothing showed up on 3 x-rays, a CT scan and an MRI, I saw a neurosurgeon (not sure why the doctor didn't send me to a neurologist first - I assume a neurosurgeon would pick up on anything that a neurologist would have otherwise found though) who said that no nerves appear to be compressed and nerve-wise everything appears fine. I'm on 4 ibuprofen tablets, 35 mg of oxycontin (20 in the morning and 15 in the night) and 2-3 endones per day - I've kept it at the lowest dosages possible the whole time to make it easier for myself to come off when I need to - and have taken them for about 10 months (having tried many other pain relief medications previously which I guess didn't help as they weren't working on the nervous system) and need to start weening as you can't stay on them too long and I'm struggling to find a doctor who will prescribe it to me since I've moved house. I'm VERY scared as I know how hard it is to come off and I'm in no less pain than I was when I started the medication. I have attempted to cut down from 20mg in the morning to 15mg (alternating every 2nd day with 20mg) a number of times since I moved 1 month ago (which of course added to my stress levels and pain) and the pain has become so much more intense and I struggle to do anything including think, not just on the days I take the lower dose but for about a week after I go back to the normal 20mg every morning. I've also tried hydrotherapy, physiotherapy, accupuncture and I continue to read books on chronic pain, do the recommended stretches (a lot) and walk when I can, though I struggle just making dinner for my family each night. None of this has been particularly helpful. I am hoping that there's some information someone could give me to help me with this situation and am keen to know if it could be nerve related even though no nerves are compressed. I have had a lot of stress in my life and depression (all under control, though much harder to manage with all this pain and inability to do much) and post-traumatic stress and I find any extra stress since my injury enhances the pain even more. A similar thing happened to my 5th metatarsal on my right foot nearly 3 years ago with nothing showing up on the x-rays or CT scan for it and it still swells up regularly and hurts all the time too. 'm getting nowhere with it and it's affecting my life a lot, I fear I will become fairly bed-ridden from the pain (not to mention the withdrawals) as I reduce the medication and I have no idea what to do to make it so that I can get any better or continue to function in the things I need to do each day. Any help anyone could give me would be GREATLY appreciated, Thankyou, Angela.
