Nerve replacement? May be inapropriate site.

New postby Kamn on Sun Nov 13, 2011 9:29 pm

Good day. I'm sorry if I offend anyone and I realise that my question might not be in the right place, however, I can't seem to find a right place to post this.

Is it possible to replace, not regrow, a major nerve using something else, like a wire?

I know it sounds silly, but when you think about it, the nerves are the wiring of our system. What is going to go wrong? This has been bugging me for months now, and I don't know why this isn't done yet. I am not a medical professional, but here are my thoughts:
1. it has been done. Not in the same manner, but a nerve WILL give and receive pulses from a wire, if the two are properly connected.
2. System rejection could be mitigated by use of proper materials. As far as I know, titanium alloys are conductive and the body has a minimal rejection rate.
3. There could be some mixed up feelings due to scrambled pulses. Such as feeling cold when being tickled. But there would BE some feeling and most of my clients agree that feeling ANYTHING from the waist down would be a blessing.
4. Obviously, I'm not recommending just shoving a wire into somebody thinking that would cure them. But is it, at least on paper, probable or possible to do this with some results? Again, I don't mean a full recovery, but feeling ANYTHING...
5. Would this enable someone to use that part of their body? If not, why not?

Thank you for your time
