Mystery ailments following Spinal Surgery

New postby minou2 on Thu Sep 03, 2009 8:26 am

My mother (72 yrs old) had spinal surgery for stenosis in May. They placed a rod and two screws on the top 3 vertabrae and entered through her neck. Immediately following the surgery she could not lift her right arm above her shoulder. She also felt naseus and unbalanced after the surgery almost all the time. She had an EMG they said the nerves are fine. Surgeon said her arm is a rotator tear or slight nerve compression from surgery. Two weeks ago she passed out when she bent to lift a can off the ground. She then developed an immediate high grade temperature. Dizziness worsened and she went to ER. They did MRI's found no problems in brain or nerve. Said she had a UTI, gave her antibiotics and checked her out. Now, along with naseau and imbalance, she has a lowgrade fever and last night her lower back was in so much pain she couldn't move. They gave her vicodin and another antibiotic, saying it might be vertigo. Today her fever is high again, around 103, her lower back is in extreme pain and we are headed back to the ER. Does anyone have suggestions about what tests I might ask them to perform to rule things out and try to determine the source of all these problems?
