Intense Tightness of the Temples and head and jaw soreness

New postby k7014 on Thu Jul 23, 2009 11:20 am

Almost two years ago, I was diagnosed with TMJ from a four car accident on I-95 that sent me and my vehicle into a cement wall. Well, I treated the TMJ and gave up months after the mouth piece treatment didn't seem to work. I just figured somewhere down the line, I might opt for the surgery to put my discs back in place... I am still undecided... well, now I am not so sure about being undecided and here is why;

On Tuesday of last week, (9 days ago) I hit my head hard on a fire extinguisher. The force of the hit knocked the extinguisher off of the wall that it was barely attached to. The impact was so intense that I had to hold my head for a minute and was crying so hard. I am a female... I am allowed to cry. lol. Well, anyways, someone came over to check out my head and asked that I remove my hands from the impact area. And so I did and she said "oh you're bleeding." So immediately I decided to go to the ER to get my head checked to make sure everything was ok internally with my head. I requested a CT scan and apparently everything came back normal.

On Friday, 3 days after this accident, I started experiencing random tightness of the temples as well as soreness in my head and jaw areas. Specifically, the temples continued through Saturday and then became more intense and random throughout the rest of the week and is still here with me today (9 days after the hit). Keep in mind that I am 25 and my dad's cardiologist recommended that with the ocassional headaches and the intense tightness of the temples and being diagnosed with TMJ, that I see a neurologist. I scheduled to see one next week Tuesday. Is this a good option and what could they possibly do for me?

In the meantime, I decided yesterday to pop back in with my TMJ doctor and wanted him to run a head xray from ear to ear to compare the TMJ now from two years ago. His visit yesterday, just felt the tightness in my temples and adjusted the TMJ biteplate that I used to wear and told me to wear the plate for two weeks straight non-stop and to take it out on dates etc. He knows me too well. Well today, I decided to research this since he told me to delay on the neurologist because he believes that there is a good chance that this biteplate will help me greatly. In the meantime with his opinion, I do not know if I should still opt to see the neuorlogist or if I should still just request the ear to ear xray of my head to see the if possible further damage the extinguisher might have done to my TMJ.

I already know that after day 1 of the biteplate, I am still experiencing the intense tighness of the temples and soreness remains around the head and jaw areas... this worries me a little because I don't know if I should be patient and wait out two weeks of this discomfort.

If you or someone could offer me some suggestions, such as should I wear this biteplate and for two weeks continuous like he has suggested?, should I demand for this ear to ear xray?, and should I keep the appointment with the neurologist? Also, one more question, after you know all that happened here, do you have any ideas of what could have happened further to me that could be the cause for specifically the intense tightness of the temples?

I appreciate any and all advice that you may be able to offer to me at this time. Thank you very much!
