heterotropia and schizencephaly

New postby doulos12 on Sat Mar 19, 2011 10:02 pm

My wife and I are licensed foster/adopt parents. We have been asked to adopt a little girl (almost 1 year old) who has been diagnosed with grey matter heterotropia and schizencephaly. I know they're both pretty rare, and we understand it can have all kinds of symptoms. We've read what we can, but we essentially have one question: will she walk?

She's crawled for the first time last week, and she can stand if we hold her hands to steady her. She seems very strong.

So I know she'll likely have muscle problems, but does that mean she'll atrophy in some way or just only get to a certain point? As long as she doesn't regress, we could take her.

Our house has tons of steps, even to get to the bathroom. That's why I ask. When she's 16, we won't be able to carry her up & down easily.

Dear doulos12,

I am not sure how much information or help you might have received since your post.

I have a daughter with unilateral closed lip schizencephaly and heteratopia. She is 18 now.

The range of outcomes with these disorders is vast, ranging from severe physical to severe learning disability, seizure disorder etc.

I won't go into a huge amount of detail if it is not relevant to you.

Please let me know if my knowledge and experiences might be useful to you.

Stan.
