Facial and patchy numbness, hot cold sensations over body

New postby kangastu on Thu Dec 04, 2008 4:24 am

Two years ago.. one morning I woke up and the left side of my tongue was completely slack. Went to a GP, and after a few days was sent for an MRI and admitted to the Emergency Department at my local hospital. Had Lumbar puncture and full bloods taken. Was sent by ambulance 160km to Neurology Hospital in Melbourne. Had extensive tests. Over a few days, the whole left side of my head went numb. More tests, CAT Scans, Xrays, another lumbar puncture, ENT exams.... They could give no diagnosis. Ruled out stroke, meningitis, STD's, MS, etc. They discharged me saying that they didn't know what had caused my symptoms, that hopefully it would get better, but may not.

Over a couple of months the symptoms did reduce. My tong is still about 20% slack, my face about 20% numb. I just kind of got used to it.

One year ago.... I was very concerned that my memory was effected, and that it was linked to the initial symptoms. I saw a clinical pneuropsychologist and underwent lengthy 'memory' testing. She concluded that my memory was very good, but that I was suffering from depression. I was a bit depressed at the time, but nothing major. Again, I just got used to it. It is like looking back on the day, and it seems like it was years ago. I can remember most of it, but it's 'foggy'.

Two months ago... I was at work, in a factory, and felt my right shin burning. I thought that I was leaning on a hot electric motor. I looked down, but there was nothing there. The sensation did not go away. I went back to my GP. Had xrays and later a bone scan. All were clear. Then the hot sensation spread up to my knee, and down the right side of my foot. Then the numbness in the left side of my face came back and my tongue started to feel strange again. I have had more MRI's and many bloods taken.

Then I noticed a large numb patch above my left knee. Over the last few weeks numb patches, hot patches and feelings like cold water pooring over parts of me have spread to my whole body. Pretty much my whole head is numb, and sometimes feels very hot. I had terrible pain that stretched from the right side of my neck to my right upper arm. That has faded to a bad ache, and has spread into my left shoulder and half way down my back. It also feels burnt. The left side of my throat has lost most sensation, my ayes are often very sore, like after swimming, my tinnitus is worse, and I have severe pain in my knees and hips. My legs feel heavy, and so do my arms.

It gets noticeably worse every day. For instance, this afternoon I noticed a burning sensation on my stomach. I feel that if it progresses at this rate, in a couple of months I will be bed ridden.

I have seen 31 doctors now, had many many tests. I am waiting on Lyme Disease test, and hair mineral analysis results. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. I am getting very depressed and desperate.

Thanks

WOW!...Someone I can relate to! Well, my symptoms started out almost 6mths ago. I had a sudden heaviness on the left side of my head that nearly pulled me on the ground. This followed with head ticks that noticeably made my head vibrate to the left and SEVERE fatigue where I was pretty much bed ridden for 3 wks!

About a mth later, I was seen by a doctor about a sharp pain on the left side of my head (above my ear) that turned numb, even turned the left side of my face and eye area numb, after taking an "Aleve" for the pain. The Doctor gave me advice on how to cope with migrane headaches....I tell ya, this pain was nothing like I've felt from any migrane!

Not too long after, I went to my Family physian and we both agreed that I should take the rest of the semester off college in hopes of seeing a change in my symptoms with illiminated stresses. A week or so later, My fatigue was completely gone! I felt better for 2 weeks until one evening my left arm feel asleep. I tried to shake it out but it was very floppy and I got major pins and needles everytime I tried to move it. By the next morning I lost alot of the use of my left arm (wich thkfully I regained full use of a mth later). By that aftenoon, my whole left leg was numb and so was my face. A day later, I still had the same symptoms but associated with tiny shooting pains thoughout my body, loss of apetite and nausea. I Had a CT Scan of my head done and it came up clear.

After this point, things just kept on progressing day by day, week by week. The numbness had moved to the right side until eventually I was experiencing total body numbness. The fatigue returned only it felt more physical. My muscles felt weak, as if I was loosing endurance. Around this time I was prescribed Paxil since I thought my symptoms may be related to anxiety. The Paxil helped a bit with the fatigue and the mood swings.
...cold sensations came in patches on various parts of my body (I haven't felt a nice warm bath since and came quite close to burning myself a few times by re-adding hot water), muscle spasms in my neck only at night, extreme pressure in my skull and eyes(other times it would feel like my head is being squeezed), migranes, mood changes, facial numbness lasting several days, blurred/doubled vision lasting up to 2 wks, muscle and joint pain (it was hard keeping a purse on my shoulder or crossing my legs sitting), body tremors, head/eye/verbal ticks, the feeling of a large bug crawling on the right side of my head my head!, very poor short memory (I even forgot my Mother's and brother's birthday!!!), waking out of bed with a drunk feeling to the point I'd have to just lay back down (and I don't drink!), Major clumsiness, pain jolting down my right leg during intercourse....not sure if I missed anything...geez!

Presently, I am on the Paxil and some Gabapentin for the shooting pains. I had to "up" my dosage of the Gabapentin a week ago because it wasn't working and already have to get something stronger because I have been taking (too much) ibuprofen and tylenol3 along with it....and it is STILL not alleviating the pain! I still have numbness in patches, blurred vision off and on, dizzy spells (on one occasion had led me to faint with a "fizzing" sensation in my head that lasted minutes when I came to), mental/physical fatigue, popped ears, constant sharp pains that shoot down ALL parts of my limbs, breasts, back of neck, my head (mainly on the sides), face and ears, it's mainly in my right hip along with a burning feeling, bowel irregularities(to the point that I'm awakened a few times a night by the "need" to "go" but have nothing), my brain feels constantly "foggy", still have sore neck muscle ONLY when I'm trying to sleep that magically disapear the second I get out of bed in the morning!, small patch of skin on my ribs that feels like I've been freshly and severely burnt but nothing is there, not even a mark, cold patches..ect.

My life has literally been put on hold because of this condition. I was unable to return to College to finish my year, I can barely do my part-time hours at work and I'm a single mother to a 7yr old boy who has just been fully assessed/diagnosed with Asperger's Syndrome and needs his Mother more than ever right now. I don't know how I'm gonna feel from one day to the next and get excited when I have a decent day only to have an even worse one the next. I've had every bit of blood work imaginable done, 24 hour urine test and have been checked for STDs also wich all came up clean. I am still awaiting a Brain and Neck MRI, a Spinal Tap and a visit with a cardiologist. My neurologist feels I may have Hyperventalating Syndrome....?...I have a feeling I'm heading in another dead end for a diagnosis. So far I've had several doctors and a few neurologists scratching their heads at this one and all say that "my symptoms don't add up to ANYTHING". I guess it just feels good to know I'm not the only one out there.

My son recently told me he misses me. I responded: " I miss me too".

I'll keep you posted

@ IDLUVSUMINFO You ve described exactly the symptoms I am experiencing for the past 2 months. Only thing is i have pain in the left part. I ve seen around 20 doctors now, including all kinds of blood tests and MRI's. The only relief i have for now is after taking a few antistressers for 2 weeks by a neurologist.

No body was able to analise the proble. The discomfort of hot and cold feeling still exist. I do have some floaters in my eyes and occasionally have blurred vision for a few seconds.

Hope some one finds a solution if this a common problem.i guess it is optimism as you say you ve experienced for 7 years now. I wonder how long it takes me.

Add my name to the list. I have been experiencing patchy numbness and cold sensations off and on for over two years. I have had 3 MRI's, 2 CATscans, been treated for stroke symptoms and no real diagnosis. My PCP thinks this is all migraine related; I have my doubts.

Mine stared in 2006 with a bout of vertigo which lasted about three weeks. A few weeks later, I suffered severe bilateral numbness on my right side that improved after about 30 minutes; however, I still had residual tingling and an ice-cold sensation in my right hand and right side of my tongue for several weeks. It eventually went away. In January 09, symptoms returned, and a trip to the ER landed me in the hospital for two days. Again, symptoms went away over a period of weeks. Now they are back, and the cold sensation is over my entire upper torso and arms. I am getting depressed.

Has anyone gotten a solid diagnosis yet?

Have any of you considered LYme Disease - worth looking into as it can cause all of these symptoms and more. Most people don't recall a tick bite either.

[quote="saisen"]Hi Kangastu ,IDLUVSUMINFO ,StrangeLife,

I'm also having the same symptoms, anybody has luck with diagnose with good Dr.?
hi im mischelle I to AM exactly the same and had it after a hysterectomy after i woke up it was just pins and needles numbness now its so much worse and ive gotten a little fibro with it. sometimes i think i have bugs all over me crawling not at the same time. sometimes on a leg sometimes on my head i feel horrible have had everything done except for the tap my hot and cold feelings are in different places at different times i hate the ear pain and popping as if in a airplane i used to have a excellent internist in Houston he listened and cared. he told me the pains in my head above my ears are nerves and they were acting up. {{{{ well GOD said i will afflict you with BURNING PAIN and a disease that will never go away so this isn't a new thing the profits even had such pains} but for 15 years they said it was in my head nothings wrong {{{ i just recently read about it in the Bible they used to be smart in that time were just finding out they even had brain surgeries. but i guess when our languages changed so did our minds and forgot all technology and everything else and are now in a repeat in time. nearing an end. i dont think they can help us. only god can but more than likely wont but if we hurt now maybe we will go to heaven. and wont hurt in the end.}}}} dont take aspirin anti inflammatory steroids. you will just get worse or get meningitis heart attach stroke but if your special you might be able to but be warned. My back has cold and hot feelings like the fluid in my spinal cord gets cold and then a lighting bolt then burning and finally dissipates. this is mainly in the thoracic area i go through this and have constant burning i have a disk bulge and osteophytes and cervical stenosis ect all of neck is bulging disk except one. but have done all test nothing has come of any except they found the numb areas everywhere even in places i didn't know were even numb and my blood says i have a lot of muscle damage of course with all the nerves going crazy constantly. I just moved to northern virginia where i found doctors dont care unless u pay a very high dollar and pay cash no insurance excepted all doctors should take insurance or no one should and we not have to pay one doctor more than the other and insurance not be there to buy at all. and all the prices should go down on medicines ect.. I have the best insurance ppo but its no good if the doctor that you have to go to dont except it. i came from Houston where the Best Doctors are in the usa. they dont charge like here and are not afraid of anyone they do what they went to school to do. i went to a doctor here i told him i take lortab maybe 4x a day and other days i swap out percocet 10 mg when my pain prevents me from doing anything or when i have to go shopping for more than half an hour on any day because my pain is so bad that if i dont lay down straight flat on the floor i think ill have a stroke. the pressure and burning is then relieved and after 10 min. i can get up and finish the dishes or whatever i have to do. since i moved to virginia not one doctor will give me my medicine i said to the last doctor i went to the law states that chronic pain patients can have even morphine not that i want it i dont i hate medicine but i hate pain too i hate to look out of my window and see people jogging why because i want to do that too i only take what i need when i need it but here they wont give any He said its a free country i said for you i guess but for me its not or i wouldn't have to come begging for pain relief and be told no go die. Also for firemen its not a free country they cant say well we put out half the fire thats good enough its a free country if we wish to put the rest out we would but we dont and we are not going in no building to save anyones life thats to dangerous for us let them burn. thats how the doctors here think. that its ok to let us burn to death. i take meds i still have pain what will happen when i dont have anymore because i cant find a doctor to treat me i tried all the medicine out there and none helps but what i take and most of the medicine hurts me even some narcotics and antibacterial also i have sinus and a cyst in my neural canal they say that is curling my spinal cord end. all this is since i got a cyst removed and had to have a hysterectomy i woke up from surgery with it but it has gotten worse each year 15 years i took nothing dealt with it 6 years out of that i had medicine that helped but not completely. i take lyrica but if i miss a dose im in severe pain when i first started taking it helped ive gotten worse and at the same time i feel like im becoming immune to it... what brought me to this web site is that both my left arm and left leg feels like its being squeezed dont know why im worried from shoulder to foot. and theses doctors look at every one of my records as if they mean nothing and are not real with out a care im seeing a neurologist here he thinks i might have Myasthenia gravies even though i dont think it is ill let him check and get the blood work done but i know its damage from a medication during surgery or a slip of the knife. that damage not being repaired has done this and he wont find anything. im sorry i know i didnt help but i had to vent my frustration with these doctors makes me wana move out of here to a more free country because this isnt a free country germany is better than this place and they care more and not flaunt that they do. lol and i said for along time i was born in the best country on earth full blooded american and now im starting to rethink it. sorry if i offended anyone im just angry after the anger i will be depressed and im not missing any serotonin. love you good luck all god bless

add me to the list 24 year old male. I have everything listed above, it's been a year and a half with the same symtoms plus some, right after having viral miningitous.I had stroke like symtoms and seizure like symtoms with no epilepsy found on several eegs. had every test under the sun minus an emg and brain/ spinal mri which are scedualed soon but as of yet the doctors don't have a clue, the only test that came out positive was on a tilt table test they said I had Dysauotnomia but that's like a tile over many subtitles so they really still don't know exactly what I have. they say I have too many symtoms to have any one thing and all test come up clean even an ecocardiogram and a 2 lead 30 day push button heart rate monitor (push the button when ever you feel anything not normal. I'm not sure I rember what "normal" feels like anymore so when do i press the button?). I never know from one day to the next what symtome I'll have or if I'll have any at all. memory lose is the bigest concern for me, I can't spell any more, and when I'm asked or told to do something I hear the words but it's like my mind has to think extra hard to process it and people get so aggrevated with me as though I don't listen or don't want to do the task but my mind will... eventually (say a min or two later) put the words and meanings together to put my body in motion to complete the task, usually by that time the task is already started by someone else or I'm getting fused at like I'm just lazy... and that may be true maybe that's the problem my mind/ nerves are "lazy" or slow to process information. I also get the drunk feeling as though I can't even stand up, but I don't drink. just wish some Dr. would recognize us as a comunity of people with something really wrong that needs treatment so we can all get back to our lifes the way they were before this all started. More Doctors need to take us more seriously and more study being done to fine a treatment or cure. I don't know about you all but for me it seems to be progressive. Seems as though Dr. now a days are in it more for the money than to help people. imagine if we were all cured or at least treated then we would not have to go to each of these specialist and having all these test. the doctors would lose money. as long as we are unwell they are getting bussiness to "find what's wrong", when we get better they lose bussiness. if it were them or someone close to them they may try harder to find a cure or treatment. they don't personally know what it's like to live this way so why should they care? we're just another number and another dollar to them.

I am also having a similar problem. In august of 2010, I was in the theater with my fiancee when suddenly I had strange sensations in the back left side of my head. I also have epilepsy, so we went to the ER. After many tests, they said I had anxiety problems. I was sent home. For the following days and in September, I was having panic attacks, migrains, and feeling my bodies correct balance. In October, the panic attacks had gone away along with the migrains, but the balance problems continued. I also started to have sudden shaking and tremor fits that only took place on the left side of my body. Because of my epilepsy, they thought these could be seizures. That caused my doctor to change my medication. In November, the shaking went away, but balance problems continued and I started lost some feeling on the left side of my body. It had more of a numb feeling on the whole left side, along with feeling cold. Certain parts of my body, like my elbow, were sensitve, while the rest of the left side had less feeling, for example, when I had my head on a pillow, the left side felt like it was on cement. I also felt like I had somewhat of a depth perception and seeing things a little blurry from my left eye. When I sat down, my left side felt more like a skeleton because I didn't feel the chair and the left side almost felt like it was floating. These problems seemed to stay and turned into more of a settled, regular feeling that has continued. All my tests, the EEG and MRI, the blood tests and who knows what else (there were a lot, including a week in the hospital in October) turned out normal. I have started to think that this may persist for the rest of my life. What I have read from all of you, is the only place where I have found anyone with similar feelings. I am thinking this is something that has never been diagnosed correctly or never diagnosed at all. If anyone ever finds an answer to this, please post it. Good luck to you all.

I have sufferd the same for 3 months then strangely my children got it..pins and needles from head 2 toe numbness in face and abdomen bowel problems(constipation) and so on.mine is down 2 a virus(stomache virus and flu) that causes eratic nerves and anxiety which can make the nerves worse causing more twitching..medication does not work unless it is a serious underlying problem as most will set seritonin levels high wich makes everything worse.plenty of fluids and the right vitamin I found calcium garlic and a multivitamin works...my 7 year old son has it at the moment and god bless him his face twitches don't even bother him he goe hyperactive due 2 the eratic nerves but my daghter.got a little depressed but she ok now excercise and vitimans. This could be due to calcium deficiency.

I’m sorry if this has already been said but I suffered from partial numbness of face, fatigue, 24-7 shakes and moving hot and cold patches. Was suffering from anxiety and depression. Did go to help group once but Doctor wasn’t happy, Doctor said if I went to help group I would think it was ok to be anxious, so I decided to fight it alone. Was 19 with 5 bad life experiences most would be lucky to never have to experience but was strong enough to get through it.

Its somewhat nice knowing others also feel this way. In one way or another I have felt alot of these symptoms most of you describe. I have had many various tests done and everything has come up clear. The doctor said maybe it could be depression and anxiety. However, I have been dealing with depression for many years and have it under control its only lately where I have had anxiety and panic attacks. I dont remember the last time I felt "normal" I feel as if life is very foggy. I really would like to know if anyone has made any progress to living a better life. If anyone has found tips, exercises, dieting, or anything to somewhat give us some peace of mind.

WOW! It is great to hear others with this problem-- I am epileptic so all my docs are trying to tie all of this to that. I know it is not! However- - - I've had MRA, MRI, CT, EEG, Video EEG, X-Rays, Cardiograms, new seizure meds, Stress Tests, 5 trips to the ER in Nov and 1 this past month. NOTHING!!! Everything they do or take from me is NORMAL! (the EEG said I have epilepsy! wow, I've know that for 48years not!)
I have had this noise in my head that is bothering me and it seems to follow a pattern as to how I am feeling emotionally. That has been going on for the past 8 years anyway. I've learned to live with that - Docs don't understand that one - plus my memory has in's and out's. I still can not remember what all the things my kids did as they were growing up or what went on last summer. I feel so horrible when family talk about the good times - I don't remember them.
I have thought of depression and or anxiety attacks/panic attacks, but my Neuro says - we'll just wait to see how these new meds do first! I am a person wanting to live a life semi knowing what is going on in it!
Your letter is from Feb 2012! Thank you - I hope you feel better- - this has helped me :-)

Hey everyone, my wife has similar symptoms. Numbness, muscle ache, extreme fatigue, and is some days bed ridden. She has been to her specialist and he did a bunch of tests. One thing she tested positive for were the RNA's found in LUPUS. He told her there wasn't a way to definitively test positive for LUPUS but with her continuing symptoms it was very likely. Just figured I would throw that out there because her symptoms never seem to go together and it was years before she found someone who could pin it down. Hope this helps.
