eye flashes w/eyes open or closed

Postby regisruin on Wed Oct 29, 2008 1:12 pm

I have seen countless eye specialists, retina, and neuroophthalmologists without any answers. I see a spinning motion in the center of one eye. When eye is closed, that same spinning motiion is more pronounced, looks like flames flickering, along with a star burst effect every few seconds. This starburst is not seen with eye open.
MRI-negative. Many visual dilation tests-negative. Had fluoroangiogram for retina problems-negative. Had OCT for shape of macula/retina-slight edema. Retina specialist tried eye drops and then steroid injection-did not affect flames flickering in center of vision. I have glaucoma, but specialist said the symptom is not linked to the glaucoma, saying it is perhaps retina related. many retina specialists seen say they have no clue. Note: other eye not affected.
Any suggestinos? I'm very desperate. It does not pain, but is destroying my ability to concentrate on words, views around me, TV, etc.

I've had something similar for some time, and had all the tests you had. With the same results! My new neurologist believes it is left over optic nerve damage from an old optic neuropathy. He said many things can effect the optic nerve; infections, inflamation, etc. and sometimes the myelin sheath does not heal properly..so you get this kind of interference. Best explanation I've heard yet.

has your neurologist indicated any treatments or supplements that will help your eye condition? I looked up myelin sheath damage on the net, and found lots of literature on the subject, and quite a few supplements said to restore the sheath. eg, lecithin. If your neurologist has you on a treatment plan, could you advise me what that is? thanks in advance for any guideance. regisruin

I've consulted with an ophthalmologist on myelin sheathing. According to this expert, there is no supplement to help protect the sheathing and thereby the nerve. Also, he says there are no diagnostic tools to identify myelin sheathing damage. How does this information compare with your neurologist's comments about your eye condition? regisruin
