EEG

New postby greg on Sun Dec 13, 2009 1:13 pm

I know diazepam causes minor changes in EEG. Would the EEG be less likely to show a spike while taking this medication? Does caffeine really have an impact, I have read that it doesn't?

You are right.
Any drug that stops epileptic activity (such as diazepam / valium) will make it less likely for epileptic spikes to appear during an EEG.
Caffeine does not really have an affect other than to stop you falling asleep (in some cases a sleep EEG is important).

In addition, diazepam can cause an increase in "beta rhythm" on the EEG, although this is not usually a problem to spot.

High doses of diazepam that cause confusion may lead to more significant EEG chanhes.

Hope that helps
