My mom is being treated for seizures. She has seen nuerosurgeons, cardiologists, vascular surgeon etc. They can't find any reason for a blood clot to have formed, but are guessing she had a stroke on the left side of her brain. At her worst she had a blank stare and was very aphasic both receptive and expressive. The first time they gave her the tpa? shot for clot busting. Then it happened again 11 days later, same symptoms. The first time her aphasia went away surprisingly rapidly. Over the course of a week or so. The second time, it's taken longer. She did show large amounts of seisure activity from the second episode on her EEG. It responded ok to Keppra, still showing some activity on the EEG after she'd been on Keppra for a few days. The EEG that they took after the first "Stroke" did not show any meaningful seizure activity. She has auditory hallucinations out of her right ear. These started after her first "Stroke" and stopped after she came home. After the second episode they are still with her at home. They seem to be more of an echo of her thoughts. Example: We are at the beach, on the way home she hears waves lapping in the car. I say a statement to her, 2 minutes later she hears me talking in her ear saying what I said earlier. Or, something that mom thinks (normally) will be said into her ear by someone else who is not there. She has had two MRI's, one after each incident. The first one shows an area in her left brain, the area where communication is manufactured, that is affected. The second shows the same area, but now with a larger effected area. There is a shadow that the tech saw and nobody knows what it is. None of the doctors say "tumor", although it is not ruled out.
Mom's left side vein that goes to her brain has minimal blockage. This is the side that would effect the brain in the area the doctors see that is effected. On a side note, her right carotid artery is 90 percent blocked from her chin to her eye. Stenting is not a suggested option. The doctors believe that this was caused from a tramatic accident sometime in mom's life. It is smooth on the interior of the vein. Also, a test was done to see if her heart had a hole in it and it does not. Nothing that would be throwing clots up. She does have a leaky valve, however, her cardiologist says that is normal for a person her age and doesn't have anything to do with clots. Currently, she is on Plavix, asprin, keppra, pills for acid reflux and cholesterol medication. Any ideas as to what's going on with my mom will be extremely helpful. All of her doctor's are perplexed because she is not following normal guidlines with her symptoms. Thank you for your time.
