Hi,
I am new here and would like to thank you for this amazing website and the outstanding help this is provided to people in search of answer, if not psychological support sometimes, this is what medicine is all about after all.
I am a medical student in the UK, 2 years ago Iin my year 1, I had to received hep B injection, at the third one I experienced horrible side effects that left me sick for a year or so..I had to take a year off med school before coming back.
side effects popped up within few days and were:
terrible headache to the point that I had to go to ER department , they put that on exam stress which I found ridiculous
red painful eye
otitis
lymphadenopathy
horrible joint pain similar to polyarticular joint pain that we see in ankylosing spondylitis, rheumatoid arthritis and so on..
muscle cramps
cognitive impairment
crying upto 10 times a day without knowing why
sleeping 15hours a day for 10 month
burning sensation in nerves for 10 months
body shutting down every 28 days for about 2/3 days
muscle twitching
limbs jerking when asleep, they wold wake me up
did 3 episcleritis within 3 months of times then nothing
within 7 months of vaccination I started losing muscle in my hands , 1st interosseus
then in my left leg, my quadriceps lost about 2 centimetres
then 3 more months later muscle atrophy in my left arms, distally, brachioradialis muscle
similar in the right arm but to a lesser extent
in the meantime, loos of knee reflexes that are almost absent, same in elbows and bicipital tendon in both arms
no loss of power, no weakness...
anyway, I did full exmination:
blood count normal except that I had severe deficiency in vitamin D (4ng/ml)
although the doctor could see the lymphadenopathy nothing was found....?? weird...
CPK normal
no sign of infection or inflammation, CRP-ESR normal
emg normal
nerve conduction normal
evoked potential normal
MRI normal
neurological exam only showed;amyotrophy in hands, arms, and very insidious in left legs.
within the past 6 months I greatly improved, got back to physical activity, can play football 2 hours, went back to martial arts training, no more cramps, no fatigue
the only past medical history i have is cervical stenosis in c4/c5/c6 with loss of lordosis, osteophytes pressing laterally on left side of spine
but no clinical signs, no radiculopathy. I saw the orthopeadist yesterday who said my symptoms are not due to cervical stenosis
being a med student I know that my symptoms are related to peripheral neuropathy, lower motor neurone condition
however, I can't pretend to know much more in neurology than a neurologist..
my neurologist said he can't come up with a clear diagnosis after 2 years of follow-up every 6 month
the main reason seems I don't have any other signs that should be expected from someone with my complaint, which basically should be pyramidal signs of upper motor neurone condition: no spasticity, babinsky negative,no clonus, no hypereflexia etc...
it's been 2 years now that I have been living with "unexplained symptoms" but these past weeks muscle twitching have come back in my arms, hands, legs, chest, back, and face, sometime the whole triceps twitches, sometimes the biceps, sometime the quadriceps muscles, these days mainly my left pectoralis muscles when I go to sleep, to the point that if I lie on my right side I would not be able to sleep due to the left pectoralis muscle twitching my
My 2 questions are the following :
can peripheral neuropathy settle to normal?
does this pattern of random twitching disapearing for weeks and coming back weeks later seen in motor neurone disease like ALS, MS and others?
I am just worried about the future as I have put myself in debt to study medicine, I am married, and have a 4 monts old daughter
would my prognosis be positive enough so I can keep studying medicine, or should I stop, go back to work and pay off my debt while I still can/
any private or public comment, support, advise would eb greatly appreciated.
all the best to everyone.
Cotroni
