PET FDG Meaning

New postby alfredo on Mon May 12, 2008 9:15 am

I recently had a PET FDG that indicated "symmetrically decreased activity in the basal ganglia which demonstrate uptake similar to that of the cerebral cortex". Can anyone explain what this could mean in laymen's terms?

It basically means that according to the report, the areas in your brain called the "basal ganglia" (involved in co-ordinating movements and are the areas involved in conditions such as parkinsons disease) appear to be less active then they should be on both sides of the brain.

No conclusions can be drawn from this test alone...the most important thing to know is why it was requested in the first place!
