Sleepiness with ritalin?

Postby texkatymedboy on Thu May 22, 2008 12:40 am

Hi, my question is straightforward, however, far from simple. I took adderall for a few months.. and then stopped it. It's like ritalin, just a different drug here in the us. Anyhow, when I started it back up a year later, it made me sleepy, whereas before it woke me up. The same thing happens with coffee now, it makes me sleepy.. Even provigil which is a new drug for narcolepsy, makes me sleepy. My doctor couldn't believe me when I said it made me sleepy. The complete opposite reaction occurs for me. Alcohol, gives me a rush, instead of making me sleepy. Now the million dollar question is why does this happen?

A good 8-10 hours.. I had a sleep study done awhile back, and everything looked good there. Also had an MRI done as requested by a neurologist, and he couldn't find anything wrong.

I apologize for my delayed response. Any form of stimuli will cause it, such as stress, even drinking orange juice will make me sleepy right away. If I were to wake up in the morning and not drink/take any of those, it is usually about 2-3 hours before sleepiness sets in, but those substances/medications will just make the situation worse if I take them. I'm even on a high dose of antidepressant medication right now, because my doctor suggested I might be depressed, well, it's still happening, with, or without any medication. I had an MRI done, and a neurologist said everything looked good there. Thyroid is fine, blood count is good.

I've been having this exact issue and it has kind of puzzles me. I sleep very well, but any stimulation or stress of any kind will put my body into a state of exhaustion like a narcoleptic.

Modafinil makes me tired
Dextroamphetamine (spansules) makes me tired
Methylphenidate (extended release) makes me tired

Only Instant Release dextroamphetamine works on me without making me tired, but that is only for an hour or two. I was prescribed these things for AD/HD.

Now all of the medications (except for modafinil) help my AD/HD symptoms, the only thing that I am unable to tolerate is the tiredness associated with it.

I found that if I take a stimulant in the morning, then go back to bed -- I sleep 10x better! It's the most effective sleeping pill there is for me.

Do you have an explanation for this?

Thanks
