Oxygen Deprivation

Oxygen Deprivation

Postby gradslp on Tue Mar 18, 2008 9:35 pm

How long can the brain go w/o oxygen before there is damage (permanent or temporary)?
My husband and I were playing around and to be "funny" he decided to cover my nose and mouth so I couldn't breathe. Needless to say, I didn't think it was funny, but I was in such a position that I couldn't do anything about it. I'd say it only lasted for 10-15 seconds at the most, but it's still scary. I know that oxygen deprivation is bad.

So, my question is, is this little incident going to have a permanent or temporary affect? And exactly how long does it take before permanent/temporary damage is done?

15 seconds is not long enough to become oxygen deprived.

Someone who is significantly deprived of oxygen (enough to cause brain damage) would lose consciousness during the period of oxygen deprivation.

You have nothing to worry about...except for your husband!
