Memory loss, lack of attention

I feel as if my brain is in a fog and find it hard to concentrate

Memory loss, lack of attention

New postby chr0no on Sun Dec 28, 2008 9:55 pm

Hello I hope to find an answer to this problem. I've experimenting memory loss, lack of attention and almost all the time I live like dreaming, the same way you feel when for example you watch a movie that your body is there but your mind not. I've been experimenting this for the past 7 years, but now I'm forgetting a lot of simple stuff like the keys of my house or car, my cellphone, is like I never pay attention of what I am doing or most of the time I am in automatic mode, I'm 27 years old, and I've never had a head injury or concussion. I am 5'5 135 pounds I am really worried about this, I want to live the present time like a normal person, can someone help me?

Thanks for the question:-

Has the possibility of ADHD been mentioned at any stage?
Do you have any of the following features? If so which?

1) Inattention

* often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes in homework, work, or other activities
* often has difficulties sustaining attention in tasks or play activities
* often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly
* often does not follow through instructions and fails to finish schoolwork, chores, or duties in the workplace (not due to oppositional behavior or failure to understand instructions)
* often has difficulties organizing tasks and activities
* often avoids, dislikes or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental efforts
* often loses things necessary for tasks or activities (e.g. toys, school assignments, pencils, books)
* is often easily distracted by extraneous stimuli
* is often forgetful in daily activities

2) Hyperactivity/Impulsivity

Hyperactivity

* often fidgets with hands or feet or squirms in seat
* often leaves seat in classroom or in other situations in which remaining seated is expected
* often runs about or climbs excessively in situations in which it is inappropriate (in adolescents or adults, may be limited to subjective feelings of restlessness)
* often has difficulty playing or engaging in leisure activities quietly
* is often "on the go" or often acts as if "driven by a motor"
* often talks excessively

Impulsivity

* often blurts out answers before questions have been completed
* often has difficulty awaiting turn
* often interrupt or intrudes on others (e.g. butts into conversations or games)

I do experience the symptoms below, I also have to mention that my grandparents (father side) suffer memory loss, they cannot recognize at first they own sons and daughters, just after a while they star recognizing them, I hope there's no relationship between them and me. I hope to find a solution to my problem Is really hard for me to live life like a zombie, like in a standby mode. Is there any treatment or can I perform any study to my head to discard any other medical problem. I remember that for about a week once my left leg and left arm became numb from time to time, that is like about a year ago.

Good Evening

After reading your response i liased with my GP whom advised she would refer me onto a the local mental health hospital. I have been suffering the following from the list you provided:

1) Inattention

* often fails to give close attention to details or makes careless mistakes at work.
* often has difficulties sustaining attention in tasks.
* often does not seem to listen when spoken to directly
* often does not follow through instructions and fails to finish chores, or duties in the workplace (not due to oppositional behavior or failure to understand instructions)
* often has difficulties organizing tasks and activities
* often avoids, dislikes or is reluctant to engage in tasks that require sustained mental efforts
* is often easily distracted by extraneous stimuli
* is often forgetful in daily activities

2) Hyperactivity/Impulsivity

Hyperactivity

* often fidgets with hands.
* often leaves seat in situations in which remaining seated is expected
* often runs away in situations in which it is inappropriate (in adolescents or adults, may be limited to subjective feelings of restlessness)
* often has difficulty playing or engaging in leisure activities quietly
* is often "on the go" or often acts as if "driven by a motor"
* often talks excessively

Impulsivity

* often blurts out answers before questions have been completed
* often has difficulty awaiting turn
* often interrupt or intrudes on others (e.g. butts into conversations or games)

I have wanted to study psychology and always read books and articles relating to it. I was 15 when my mother passed away, as much i wanted to return to studying i didn't i know have now enrolled onto a distance learning course but i am really frightened at the thought of whether i will be able to cope with it now as majority of the points you have mentioned above i feel relate to the way i feel. I have always wanted to help people and i have had the passion for psychology, the functions of the brain and peoples behaviour intrigues me but i am worried if i myself feel like this will i be capable of helping others. Can you please help as my GP advised she will refer me to the mental health hospital does that mean i will never be able to fulfil my dream of going into the psychology profession.

After reading about lack of concentration, attention span and memory i have changed many things in my daily activities from drinking water to hydrate the brain, exercising, reading and sleeping patterns and nothing has helped me. Is there anything you can recommend?

I look forward to hearing back from you.

This sounds like a very scary experience! You mentioned you've experienced this for several years now. Have your symptoms gotten worse over the years? I'm not even sure what that would be diagnosed as. I'm wondering if a doctor has ever prescribed you medication for this, and if so, has it helped any?

Nahida,
I have ADD-I and I have a BS in Psychology, a BA in Biology, & am in med school. Being diagnosed with &/or receiving treatment for ADD-I is NOT a big deal. SO MANY people have it, including highly successful ones!

Your goal=realize that your life experiences & struggles will only enable you to be a better counselor, a more sympathetic friend, a more wise person!

Go to the local mental health center--you have to complete a battery of tests before they even decide if you meet criteria or not. The visit, the tests, and/or the diagnosis will in NO way affect your academics or career aspirations. Just go--there is only potential harm in NOT going!

After that, go to school, live a good life, help others---ENJOY LIFE!!
