Could it be MS?

The doctor's are undecided as to whether I have MS or not...
Is this a symptom of MS?

Could it be MS?

During and after the birth of my daughter in 2000 I developed mobility problems which now means I can only mobilize with a crutch and sometimes two/wheelchair. Legs are heavy on walking I get cramps and muscle spasms in both legs and loss of sensation in the right leg. I was diagnosed with ms in 2004 following a lumbar puncture which showed oligoclonal bands in the csf but not in the serum. Mris of brain and spine are negative and still are. VEP was inconclusive and emg negative in 2004. They are now querying the diagnosis and have suggested it is a functional disorder is this possible. Other test that mimic ms have been eliminated. Prior to this I was a marathon runner and an intensive care nurse so was very active. I find the psychiatric label hard to believe any ideas?

Other Medical Problems :

Joint problems.Bone scan showed uptake insacroiliac joints, ribs, shoulders and knees but was mild ?ankyloising spondylitis. Low b12 levels
Current medications : B12 injections monthly started in 2005 due to low levels on testing.
Have started taking l-carnitine for severe fatigue as nothing prescribed by physician.

Diagnosing MS

Postby SanjpatelMD on Thu Mar 27, 2008 4:58 pm

Thanks for your question Anita,

Firstly you may want to take a look at a page I put-up regarding how we make a diagnosis of MS.. It's a bit technical but the main point is that you need 2 or more attacks affecting different areas of the nervous system and without any other better explanations.

Could you tell me what the neurologist wrote that they found on previous neurological examinations?

You said you had a spine MRI...which level was the MRI performed at?
Have you had brainstem auditary evoked potentials or somatosensory evoked potentials tested?

Looking forward to hearing from you.
